snackthak Messes was great! And Midnight really fleshes out the Stef Chura sound. Will Toledo definitely adds a distinctive CSH sound (especially on Sweet Sweet Midnight where he sings along), but the highlight is hearing the re-recording of Method Man from the 2010 s/t. A banger track! Favorite track: Method Man.

Scream 02:21
Dreaming of Being nice I projected you from a screen No one could See a thing If only you could hear me scream Dreaming of Being nice No one says a thing Frozen in a TV screen You wanted to be everything I’m selected I’m selective You can see it It’s projected And you know me But I’m lonely Yes I’m lonely If only you can hear me scream No one told me You can fold me Oh in half and hand you a piece No one knows And if you go see Oh you’ll find there’s some things you never see There’s something that you’ll never see There’s something that you’ll never see There’s something that you’ll never see There’s something that you’ll never need There’s something that you’ll never Scream If only you could hear me scream

Degrees 05:22
All that you do Formed into truth You take it or leave it Who’s got a use All that you needed Shaked and repeated Uprooted and weeded It gave you a reason On to walk off with Lean on my false hip Glances they’re greedy We’re taken them in winter I’ve got this sea To be released Glance back at me Reciprocating One million… Degrees Dark as it’s been Thicker than sin It don’t change the circumstance Even for a glimpse Into a maybe You’re gone with the crazy You go meet yourself there Where they’re all playthings Deal with the ache there Tear out the pages Feelings in phases Until they’re fading Off into winter Feed me that splinter Burn back at me Reciprocating One million… Degrees
4.
Method Man 03:07
He is a method man Sipping on a taurine can Rippin’ up a box of books He says I’ll never understand If you want it You can have it Come up after me and grab it Sprained ankle run too far Shut the door to your mouth and you Get the fuck in the car Take away what you wanted to say It gets older Day after day Bring it with you in travel My life in a spindle See it unravel He is a method man Best friend that I ever had
5.
Trumbull 01:16
Trumbull it’s the only road I know I stumble just to get to the gold and I fold You under a rock that I know And I’m told you don’t You can’t and you won’t Get that whipping grease lobotomy And figure out how to fix the sheets No I’m told you don’t
6.
Jumpin' Jack 02:32
Baby can I do a jumpin’ jack Over your heart I know There’s nothing left to bother us There’s nothing left to do but collect dust on this old Machinery and yeah I still do agree to disagree If you’re gonna bend over backwards Just to just to just to get rid of me Baby can I do a jumpin’ jack over your heart I know There’s nothing left to bother us There’s nothing left that fits and goes right where we want it Over your heart

I’ve done much better than this Still I’m waiting here at the end of this list These demons do not resist Cause I’m fucked up and I’m ready I’ll take what I know you can’t give and if you wanna live Oh if you wanna live Oh if you wanna live Oh if you wanna live Blow them a kiss Everything’s risk Baby is breathing Pretty see-through mist On the other end It forms a scar again We can scratch it through but our palms pretend On the other end it forms a scar again We can scratch it through but our palm pre... Sincerely Yours

3D Girl 03:51
My girl is 3-dimensional (3x) Walk close give it to me And if you don’t want it You can you can disagree Dumb to the letter of the beat You said you don’t care Where you came from or if you feel My girl is 3-dimensional (3x) Walk close Give it to me And if you don’t want it We can agree to disagree I don’t know where you came from And I don’t know who you blame no My girl is 3-dimensional (3x) Walk hard Give it to me And if you don’t want it You can agree to disagree Take back the thing that you needed The intellectual he bought you a reason to go home Five steps to get you where you came from Something that you don’t remember Five steps to get you where you came from So much pressure in every direction

I saw you in a dream Jordi I think it must be a good thing You were running with the shadows but you came back to shine a light on me Woke up in the morning heard my alarm clock ring I saw a little bit of light shine from the ceiling Sweet Sweet Midnight Everything you wanted Everything you called for I wanna see you breathe in Sweet Sweet Midnight Everything you wanted Everything you called for I wanna see you breathe in I saw you in a dream Jordi I think some part of you lingers You held onto my hand so tight I felt your teeth through my fingers Kept my eyes on the screen tried not to take it so seriously Someone died in black and white And at my side I felt you breathing Sweet Sweet Midnight Everything you wanted Everything you called for I wanna see you breathe in Sweet Sweet Midnight Everything you wanted Everything you called for I wanna see you breathe in You were just waking up I had a second I had to wait Here comes the light shining in Still I can’t see your face Midnight… Everything you wanted Everything you called for Sweet Sweet Midnight Everything you wanted Everything you called for I wanna see ya breathe You were just You were just waking up When I saw you there In the light In the light You said goodbye You said you’re coming home You said you’re still coming home Last time I saw you You said you’d be home You said you’re still coming home You said you’re still coming home I wasn’t moving I wasn’t moving

Love Song 01:12
Everyone that you love Is gonna know what you want When you’re gone They told me to write you a love song Before I forget They told me to write you a love song Is that so wrong?

They’ll never tear this place apart Sideways from grace the angles lost The tunnel’s time your vision’s giving in They sold you love This chalk’s all dust Hurry up there’s no time to win now Sorrow in your sigh Forget you’re getting by The dawn is drawing near I will See you in the sunrise They’ll never tear this place apart Sideways from grace the angle’s lost Go and retrace you’ll see what’s gone Left a skin behind to remind you Ain’t nothing ever gonna Fill that space again Sorrow in your sigh Forget you getting by The dawn is drawing near I will See you there See you there See you there They’ll never tear this place apart

about

“For most people who create art I would assume there is some kind of deep unanswerable hole in your soul as to why you're making it…” So says Stef Chura ahead of the release of Midnight, her gritty, vehement new album - recorded and produced by Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest -and her first new collection of songs for the Saddle Creek label. Illuminating that search for answers with a fevered sense of exploration, Midnight is a bold leap forward from Messes, Stef’s contagious debut album, with every aspect of her new work finding bold ways to express itself as it rips through twelve restless and relentless new tracks.

A couple of years on from the release of Messes, Stef is still based in Detroit, that most singular city which has seen it all, from the no-mans-land of its initial collapse through to the resurgent place it is now. Stef found inspiration from the people she surrounded with herself with, more so than the place itself. It’s no surprise that Midnight is testament to those kind of characteristics; a rugged and robust burst of defiance. “I’m usually dealing with the context of what I can’t say or haven’t said,” Stef says.

Which is to say that if its predecessor was a raw, somewhat unadorned document of Stef’s work, then Midnight is the muscular, swaggering evolution. “This album has a depth to it and a particular sound because of Will,” Stef states regarding Toledo’s input, whose spiky nuances can be found across the length and breadth of Midnight, the record presenting an exhilarating rush of sound and colour as Stef’s spirited vocal finds and signature guitar sounds unravel alongside in a thrilling meeting of ideas and influences; dispelling demons, song by song.

Where Stef’s voice was previously a somewhat ambiguous character, somewhat buried within her songs, here it is the striking opposite, an assured voice that drives the whole thing forwards. “I think a lot of Messes was lyrically unintelligible which was somewhat of a bummer to me. I had no self awareness that I was singing like that,” Stef says. “With this album I wanted it to be clearer and more listenable, in a number of ways,” Stef says. Proof of this outlook can be found on the edgy lead track ‘Method Man’, a boisterous three-minutes that melds jagged, skewed guitars with a distinctive voice that has a new-found sense of confidence, whether spitting spoken-word mantras during the exhilarating percussive coda or simply letting loose amid the squalling bluster of guitars.

You can find it elsewhere too, in fact it runs right through the heart of Midnight’s twelve tracks. Take the sweeping brilliance of ‘Jumpin’ Jack’, a somewhat more refined three-minutes that bursts into a thrilling finale, or ‘Sincerely Yours’, a brooding four-minutes initially gives deserved space to Stef’s voice and words more than ever before, before bursting into life with with a pent-up energy that positively roars from within.

“I used to only find peace in complete disorder, because order seemed completely not possible for me- hence my last album being called Messes,” Stef confesses. “Even though some of these songs came from a similar time period, I’ve grown and changed a lot over the last two years, and what I’ve processed over the last couple of years is the change that is in expressed in these songs.”

Equal parts thrilling and angsty, Midnight is a testament to the collaborative process, a record that makes the very most of those who came together to make it, but more than that, it’s a firm statement of tenacity and perseverance, of not resting on your laurels but leaping forwards no matter the situation you find yourself in. From out of one day and into the next.
